50 years ago (1958)
C. Arvid Johnston, city March of Dimes chair, was getting assistance today from Mayel Dams and members of the Earl Faulkner Unit, American Legion Auxiliary, who were conducting their annual Blue Crutch sale on the city streets. The money raised from the sale would go to help the March of Dimes in financing further research into polio.
Like the birds, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin McLean of Everett were heading south for part of the winter and, again like the birds, they would fly. They were taking the B&M Stores’ plane and planned to stop for a few days in California on their way to Mexico, Central America and South America.
25 years ago (1983)
Matt Dillon, the so-called “ratepayer rebel” who was elected to the Snohomish County PUD board of commissioners despite fierce opposition from many of the utility’s highest officials, extended an olive branch when he took his seat. He said he wanted an atmosphere where ideas clashed, not personalities.
A new school opened in the Lakewood School District. The school had about 500 students in grades seven to 11.
