50 years ago (1958)
Commander Robert F. Peterson, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Peterson, 2607 Walnut St., had assumed command of Patrol Squadron 9, one of the Navy’s top P2V “Neptune” squadrons, based at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif. Cmdr. Peterson was with VP-9 when it was commissioned in 1951.
An Everett High School and Gonzaga University graduate, John Simpson, joined the staff of the county prosecuting attorney this week, Prosecutor Arnold Zemple announced. He would serve as a deputy prosecutor, replacing Leo Geze, who resigned to join the state attorney general’s office. Simpson was the son of Harold and Mildred Simpson.
25 years ago (1983)
The Foursquare Church once made way for the Everett School District and now, in a turn-about play, the district was returning the blessing. The old Roosevelt School at 6830 Highland Drive to the Foursquare New Life Center for church services and activities. Retired Pastor Maynard Haaland said their earlier church, located at 2431 Wetmore was purchased in 1968 and later razed for the new gymnasium.
Softball and baseball players might be using two new fields at Kash Memorial Park in little more than a year, thanks to a state agency’s approval of a $150,000 grant sought by the city. The park was located in an industrial setting where noise and lights wouldn’t bother neighbors, said Ray Eubanks of Everett Parks and Recreation.
