50 years ago (1958)
Eddie Hansen bowled himself into first place in the Junior All-Star Classic league at Evergreen, hitting a 594 series and increasing his Petersen point total to 65.06. John Langley, whose win-loss record was 11-4 compared with Eddie’s 10-5, was in second place with 64.12. John fired a 554 series.
Billy Stevens splashed his way to a national record in the Northwest Invitational tournament at Chuck Lee Pool. He covered the 100-yard backstroke for boys 11 and 12 in 1:20.4 minutes. Others who did well were Eddie Eggert, Dave Williams, Bob Larsen, Lee Cody and Darlene Vasey.
25 years ago (1983)
Ray Marsh, an Everett service station owner who helped rally people behind the cause of a nearly blind boy in December, was at it again. He was branching out with the Everett-Self-Help Program, an effort to help people earn pocket change while working.
The Everett Community College women boosted their AACC basketball record to 3-1 with a 69-63 victory over Skagit Valley. Down 34-30 at halftime, the Trojans got 14 of Cathy Swetalla’s game-high 18 points in the second half to help in the come-from-behind win. DeeDee Goodspeed, Chris Bonamy and Michelle Gardner also scored in double figures for Everett.
