50 years ago (1957)
Ceremonies were held at Hewitt and Colby avenues to mark the new look downtown. The new $85,000 streetlight modernization project was completed, and nearly 70 downtown businesses had “lights on” advertisements in the paper.
Also new was the addition of the dining room and the Derby Room to the Turf restaurant at 1712 Hewitt Ave. Featuring Darigold products, Arden ice cream, Hausmann meats and Buchan bread, it had restaurant equipment from Bargreens, electrical work by Broadway Electric, plumbing and heating by Callahan and painting and wallpaper by Goldfinch Bros.

Snohomish County freshman entering the University of Washington College of Arts and Sciences with honors included Alison Grann and Stuart Russell, Everett High; Teri Trimble, Mariner High; Kenneth Riker, Arlington High; Denise Lohse, Edmonds High; David Arhcer Marysville-Pilchuck High; and David Lamb, Saskia Lund and Paul Thompson, Meadowdale High.
Burlington Northern Railroad crews worked late into the night to right two freight engines that collided head-on this morning and spilled nearly 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel into a gully near the Snohomish River.
