50 years ago (1957)
Today was Newspaperboy Day, when boys were saluted as a highlight of National Newspaper Week. George Petershagen, formerly a carrier, helped his son George, 14, fold his newspapers. They were just one such example of a father-son team who had delivered The Herald.
Pat Pfluger, winner of a recent contest conducted by Karl’s Shoe Store, accepted the first-place prize from Mayor George Culmback. The store’s manager, Harry Levy, was in attendance. The contest was conducted by Karl’s for its customers, with honors also going to other individuals.
25 years ago (1982)
Verl Brantner won $5,000 in The Herald’s weekly Football Forecaster Contest. Brantner, a crane operator for Associated Sand and Gravel, entered the contest at the urging of wife Lisa and friends Mike Peterson and Randy Willis.
Fire gutted a tavern in a landmark Snohomish building, the second major blaze in two weeks. The Snohomish General Store Tavern was a loss. The Delgaty Foods plant a few blocks away was destroyed by a Sept. 24 blaze.
