50 years ago (1957)
C.L. Cort, 3920 Nassau Ave., was the winner in the bean-guessing contest staged by the Snohomish County UGN during the Evergreen State Fair. Second place went to Mary Stradley and third to Richard Douglas, both of Snohomish. Presenting the Savings Bonds Everett’s three banks put up as prizes was Joe Walsh of People’s Bank.
Earl Paris purchased Manor Market in the Alderwood Manor business section, according to Jack Bennett of Bennett Realty, Lynnwood, who handled the transaction. Paris purchased the market from Ralph Homstead, who had owned and operated it for several years. Paris would move to Alderwood Manor from Yakima, where he had been a soft fruit orchardist for several years.
25 years ago (1982)
A daylong open house was taking place at Olympic Bank, 2817 Colby Ave., honoring Mary Ellen Egge. It was the anniversary of her 40 years of employment at the bank.
A truck carrying concrete pilings jackknifed as it turned the corner at Pacific and Rucker avenues, knocking out the traffic signal and tying up downtown traffic for hours. The truck apparently went out of control after developing a mechanical problem.
