50 years ago (1957)
Pearle Van Winkle of Everett took over as president of United Spanish War Veterans Auxiliary Department of Washington. She was chosen at the department convention in Spokane. Other state officers from Everett were Myrtle Madden, Geraldine Brinkman and Lulu Shakespeare.
Roof beams for the new physical activities and cafeteria building at Longfellow School were raised into position by the Shaffer Construction Co. crew. It was hoped the building would be ready for use by the fall. The main building was receiving alterations and new plumbing.
25 years ago (1982)
Al Bennett, former managing editor of the Herald, wrote to the paper to tell a tale about Everett’s Sue Brown. The devoted golfer had attended a friend’s wedding recently and found herself being escorted down the aisle by a tall stranger. When she told him he should be a basketball player, he replied that he was trying. It was Jack Sikma of the Seattle Supersonics.
The Columbia, one of the Goodyear blimps, was in the area again. It recently paid a visit to Everett traveling at 17 miles per hour. Bob Urhausen was lucky enough to get a ride in the 192-foot-long blimp.
