50 years ago (1957)
Rollie Berry, civil and hydraulic engineer with the engineering firm of Gray &Osborne in Yakima, was appointed superintendent of the Everett Water Department to succeed Summer Paine. Berry’s excellent background in the field made him well qualified for the position.
Residents of the area around 13th Street and Rockefeller Avenue witnessed some fancy crane operating when the first of seven laminated fir beams for the new gymnasium at Everett Junior College was hoisted into place. The arch spanned by beams was 40 feet high in the middle and 137 feet from tip to tip.
25 years ago (1982)
Jason Otava, 14, of Everett, garnered first-place honors in heated Pac-Man matches with nearly 1,800 other Atari players throughout Western Washington. This netted him a Pac-Man shirt and a trip to San Francisco to see Atari headquarters and tour an amusement park.
A handful of young men, vowing to start their own version of New York’s “Guardian Angels,” started patrolling th$e streets of Everett despite protests from local police. Some of the self-appointed guardians of the peace were Scott Harrison, John Hedgecoth and Richard Curran.
