50 years ago (1964)

July Fourth activities in Everett were to last three days. The activities included a band concert, a lacrosse game against Seattle, a parade, a pyrotechnic fireworks display and some startling wire acts by Madame Uknow and Professor Vernon.

Excavation for another addition to View Crest Abbey at the north entrance to the city was begun this week by Chet Solie with the project slated for completion within four months. Another rotunda wing would be added providing more mausoleum crypts and a new columbarium.

25 years ago (1989)

Fireworks were suspected as the cause of at least two fires in north Everett during the night. In one case a misfired bottle rocket apparently landed in the gutter on a rear roof. Some illegal fireworks were confiscated at the site, said Battalion Chief Tom Haugstad.

John Flaherty, assistant superintendent for personnel of the Bethel School District in Spanaway, was named the new superintendent of the Sultan School District. Flaherty began his teaching career in Granite Falls after graduating from Gonzaga University. He had also served as assistant principal at Lake Stevens High School.
