50 years ago (1957)
Harry Simmermacher, Everett Junior College chemistry instructor, was selected to receive a grant from the National Science Foundation for study at the Summer Institute in Chemistry at Montana State College in Bozeman, Mont. He was one of 50 high school and college instructors invited to participate in the Bozeman program.
Everett Trust and Savings Bank offered travelers check to get vacationers there safely and back. They were available at all three branches: downtown on Colby Avenue, the Broadway drive-in branch at 1801 Broadway and the Island County branch in Oak Harbor.
25 years ago (1982)
Everett lost a piece of its history when vandals torched a giant stump house in Legion Park. Park superintendent Ray Eubanks said it was a senseless act. Chris Crocket lamented that he’d been playing in the tree all his life. The stump measured 27 feet across and could hold up to 15 people.
Everett City Council President Dale Pope was pushing hard for a proposal that would put a 1920s-style trackless trolley that would run between the waterfront, downtown and the Everett Pacific Hotel. It might attract tourist dollars. Pope said if everyone worked together, it could be done.
