50 years ago (1957)
South Everett Lions Club was engaged in a scrap metal drive to raise money to complete the Youth and Community Center at Beverly Park. Donors were asked to leave their scrap at a site across from the B&M. or at 63rd and Broadway.
Collecting the scrap were Gene Garish, Cy Richards, Cliff Brecht, Bob Alexander, Frosty Bower, Joel Carlson and Marv Brokaw.
The Perpetual Help basketball team won a spot in the state tournament at O’Dea High School in Seattle.
Team members were Jack Boursaw, Bill Kickland, Paul Harbeck, Jack Bloomfield, Pat Bushey, Gene Gaines, Mike Dyre, Paul Sorenson, Maurice Olson, Ray Kortekaas and Wayne Grogseth.
The Everett Historical Advisory Commission was attempting to raise the city’s awareness of its many historical buildings.
Member Jerry Hann, an urban planner by trade, was concerned that the community reflect both the old and the new.
Member Ed Morrow, Woodside Elementary School principal, said that enthusiasm for preserving historic structures was growing.
For the first time in a decade Darrington had a full-time doctor. Dr. Betsy Butcher was practicing at the town’s clinic with nurse practitioners Stephanie Brown and Barbara Wos.
