50 years ago (1964)
Theresa Hurlburt, 7, Snohomish, won the Kids’ Salmon Derby with a 14 lb. 1 oz catch off Hat Island. Doug King, 12, Everett took second place with an 11-1 catch. Other winners were Jeff Sanders, Leonard Sunde, Larry Greenleaf, George Shea, Kim Person, Carole Johansen, Paulette Mandsager and Darrell Wick.
Ron Gold Insurance Agency, 2017 19th St., advertised that real money could be saved by careful drivers on auto insurance with their new gold key policy. The policy was non-cancellable for five years.
25 years ago (1989)
Congratulations were in order to Aaron Jones, who was elected Lion of the Year by the North Everett Lions Club. Jones had been especially active supervising the Everett Bingo Parlor on Oakes Avenue, which was operated by the Lions.
Granite Falls City Council member John Holmes looked over the park he helped to create. With little money and a lot of moxie a hole in the ground was now a community asset. Holmes said he didn’t deserve all the credit for Hillside Park, next to the fire hall, but that City Clerk Gerry James was the one who made it happen.
