50 years ago (1957)
Col. Samuel Grashio was chosen to be the new commander of Paine Air Force Base. The final nod had been given by U.S. Air Force headquarters during the previous week. He was slated to take over the position in June. Col. Wintermute was leaving in May, so Lt. Col. Danforth Miller would fill in for the interim. Col. Grashio had received his commission at Paine.
Members of the Lake Stickney Community Club did mess around with shovels. They broke ground for their new clubhouse with a bulldozer. Manning the dozer were R.W. Johnson, Bob Haskell and Don Thank. In addition, the club was going to set up a baseball diamond on their grounds.
25 years ago (1982)
Thirty-seven mobile homes destined for Anchorage were to be loaded on a cement barge at the Port of Everett. Operations manager Barry Mallow said the Kaiser Cement Co. barge, the Peter S. Hass, would carry the homes on its deck.
It would be a big summer in Darrington. The mountain town had scheduled three major events for June and July. They were the Bluegrass Music Festival and the Darrington Rodeo, annual events in the community, and the National Field Archery Association Tournament, which had never before been held in Washington state.
