50 years ago (1956)
The public was invited to the grand opening of the new Olsen Motor Service at 2417 Broadway and the premier showing of the 1957 Volkswagen Beetle. The gala celebration included a German band, free refreshments, door prizes, and balloons and party favors for the kids.
25 years ago (1981)
The Volunteers of America food bank, which faced a critical shortage, flourished thanks to public response to a plea for donations. Bank director Bertha Patapoff said that there had also been several cash donations to the bank, located at California and Lombard avenues.
The W.T. Preston, a stern-wheeler that cleaned Port Gardner Bay and other beaches in Puget Sound, was being retired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the end of the month. The ship had a crew of 13.
