50 years ago (1956)
The Rev. Emrys Thomas of the First Congregational Church was the guest speaker at the Hawthorne PTA meeting. Evelyn Berg led the group in the singing of Christmas carols, and principal Glen Dorsey extended an invitation to all parents and friends to attend the Christmas Nativity, an annual production at the school.
Through a surprise announcement in the paper, Seabees Ronni and Frank Agostinelli notified their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Agostinelli of Box 315 Foss Road, Lake Stevens, that they would be home for Christmas.
25 years ago (1981)
The grand opening of the Everett Pacific Hotel was coming up and Dottie Piasecki, director of sales, had already booked 40 conventions for the new 254-room hotel.
Twenty-three acres of freshwater marsh for a wildlife bird sanctuary was given to Edmonds by Union Oil Co., which operated a tank farm on the south waterfront. Jim Jessell, city parks and recreation director, said he hoped to keep the land as it was as a buffer between the city and the industrial area.
