50 years ago (1956)
Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cooley of Rt. 2 Everett were enjoying a one-week holiday at the Hawaiian Village. Their trip, a prize, included a flight on United Airlines to Hawaii. Mr. Cooley operated the Everett Theater.
Dick Hanson threw two touchdown passed to pace the Trojans’ attack on Yakima. Everett slashed through their opponent at Memorial Stadium, beating the Indians 27-6. Much of the yardage was carved off by backs Virgil Inman and Denny Sheppard. Walt Price coached the Trojans. Bill Prochnau was the sports reporter for The Herald.
25 years ago (1981)
Teacher, fire chief, businesswoman. Now Barbara McDonald was adding mayor to the list of jobs she’d had. McDonald was elected to the spot in the mountain town of Index. She would succeed Maggie Huff in the job.
Barely two months after her 14th birthday, Cascade High School ninth grader Carol Quarterman became the first swimmer from the Everett School District ever to qualify for the girls’ state swim meet.
Quarterman bettered the state qualifying team for the 200-yard freestyle and had also qualified for the state 500-yard freestyle. She had been swimming since she was 5.
