50 years ago (1956)
Vada Newland was hosting a silver tea in her new home at 1715 Grand Ave. The tea was sponsored by the Evergreen Town Club, a women’s civic organization that donated time and money to local projects such as the Special Education Center. Eleanor Jensen was president of Town Club, and Barbara Medema was a chair of civic affairs.
The new 1957 Chevrolet went on display at Sevenich Motors, located at 3014 Rucker Ave. along auto row. Sweet, smooth and sassy, the new Chevy was longer and lower. It sported a Turboglide automatic transmission with triple turbines, a new V-8 and fuel injection.
25 years ago (1981)
Leala Haner was selected as the 1982 Snohomish County Working Woman of the Year from a field of 20 candidates. As administrative manager and corporate secretary for Associated Sand and Gravel, she had seen many changes in 22 years. Now the firm had women working beyond the switchboard in positions such as truck driver and operating engineer.
The fast-growing area around 128th Street SW would provide the market for a proposed shopping center and business park, according to developers. They said residents surrounding the Holiday Inn would be their primary support.
