50 years ago (1956)
A once-proud little schooner that served as the home of one of the world’s great literary artists would end her sailing days and spend the rest of her existence as part of the Everett jetty. Stripped to the bare hull, the former sailing ship and tugboat Equator, used by Robert Louis Stevenson in the south seas, was at Pier 2 awaiting her trip to the boneyard.
Practical nurses and students of Everett Junior College were holding their annual potluck picnic at the home of Jeanne Irving in Marysville.
25 years ago (1981)
Looking a bit sheepish, Princess Diana strutted her way to Best in Show at the Stanwood-Camano Fair. For a train, the sheep wore an elegant antique bedspread with nylon netting around the nape. Prince Charles, better known as Stacy Johnson of Arlington, led his prize sheep.
Craig’s Lakeshore Inn in downtown Lake Stevens offered a $2.99 dinner special every day from noon until 8 p.m. The main dish was served with soup or salad, potato, vegetable, roll and butter, and dessert.
