50 years ago (1956)
Marc Baker and Lady walked off with the best-in-show award and best big dog award in the annual all-city dog show held at Garfield Park. Marietta Perkins and Candy carried home the ribbon for cutest little dog. Janice Graham and Rip Van Winkle won nicest puppy. Annette Dahlgren and Jigger won dressiest. Larry Udman and Lady took first in the trickiest division.
Three rearing ponds were under construction at the state Department of Fisheries’ Skykomish Hatchery at Startup. The ponds would nearly double the hatchery’s capacity for producing salmon. The project was due for completion in September.
25 years ago (1981)
Today’s soaring temperatures brought south county residents in droves to Lake Ballinger Park in Mountlake Terrace. The park, designed for fishing and boating access, was a beautiful grassy area complete with picnic tables and bathrooms. Nancy Lawrence, an Edmonds resident who lived on the lake’s western shore, thought that there should be a couple lifeguards on duty.
Folks who took their skinny-dipping seriously were gathering in a Sultan nudist camp today. Some 150 nudists from around the world were celebrating the American Sunbathing Association’s 50th anniversary celebration.
