50 years ago (1956)
After almost 40 years in the grocery business, Peter Moran of Everett was retiring. In Everett he was with Farm Products Grocery for 13 years, in business for himself with Pete’s Grocery on Hewitt Avenue for three years, and had been with J&P and J&E Stores for eight years.
Terry Pancoast presented a swim card denoting progress in the water to Robin Balcom and Kathy McLean. The annual swim school, sponsored for the past month by the Herald and Red Cross at Silver Lake was over. Many youngsters had learned the rudiments of swimming and others improved their technique.
25 years ago (1981)
The teaching of English as a second language was becoming increasingly important in Puget Sound public schools. Nearly 200 students were enrolled in the Edmonds School District summer English program, said Louise Baker, district director of curriculum. Mary Ann Schalow was one of the teachers.
Phyllis Howat, 55, was finally getting her chance to get a college degree. She was enrolled in a special course at Edmonds Community College for those with developmental disabilities. The course helped people such as Howat turn what they already knew through personal experience into college credits.
