50 years ago (1956)
William O. Thompson resigned as district manager of the Union Oil Co. of California here and became consignee for the Everett area. He would operate the Union Oil wholesale business here as a private enterprise. An Everett native, he had been with Union for 24 years, starting in a service station.
An era came to an end as the Great Northern Railway sent its last electric train across the Cascades. Engineer Andy Strom deadheaded an electric locomotive from Skykomish to Wenatchee, the final run for an electrically powered train on the Great Northern. From then on, the trains would all be diesels.
25 years ago (1981)
The “Notebook” column noted the birthdays of Krista Lynn Wintch, Karen Heavilin, Betty Rodland, Bob Champion, Heather Dady, Bill Dady, Jackie Gilday and Bob Hinton. Also, Stanley Gray of Sultan had earned a bachelor’s degree from Chapman College in Orange, Calif.
Cyclist Harry Stavert was a walking ad for good health and fun. He bicycled from his Marysville home to the Herald office to discuss his recent annual summer tour of the Jasper/Banff area in Canada.
