Richfield Oil Co. was planning to construct a $50 million refinery on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. Word from the company’s Los Angeles offices was that land acquisition was under way. This word came from Congressman Jack Westland and Sen. Henry M. Jackson, both of Everett.
A clean sweep down, fore and aft, was the order of the day down at the Navy pier as members of Everett’s Naval Reserve Surface Division 13-11 got ready for public inspection. Swabbing down the deck in the drill hall were seamen apprentices R.E. Payne, Lake Stevens; L.C. Knobbs, Silver Lake, and W.B. Clark, Monroe.
Ben Newland, president of Newland Construction Co., announced his retirement from the firm after 30 years. George Newland would the company’s new president and Peter Newland would become vice-president and treasurer.
