50 years ago (1956)
George Culmback was unopposed in the final election for commissioner of finance and mayor, with 5,491 votes. George Gebert was the new commissioner of public works. Absentee ballots would determine whether Arvid Johnson or Scoop Carlson was the commissioner of safety. Ben Westmoreland Jr., Ross McIvor and Knut Kravik won positions on the school board.
Florence Moormeier, 3428 Hoyt Ave., was hostess to members of the Celitas Horizon group at their meeting. Last week the group convened at the home of Edna Lamb. Maureen Rygg and Barbara Brinkley finished the ping pong and checker tournament.
25 years ago (1981)
A large headline read “Good Morning.” It was a Saturday and it was the first Saturday morning edition of The Herald. Monday through Friday continued to be afternoon editions.
When Stan Zezotarski of Butte, Mont., was looking for a top-flight instructor to prepare for the Boston Marathon, he turned to Herm Atkins of Everett. Atkins was the eighth-place finisher in the recent Tokyo Marathon. Zezotarski was very happy with his choice. One thing he was having to adjust to here was the traffic. There weren’t near as many cars back in Montana.
