50 years ago (1964)
Construction began this week on the $1 million Merri-Crest Nursing and Convalescent Home at 3515 Hoyt Ave. The 160-bed structure would be a three-story building of fire-resistant construction, and served by two hydraulic elevators.
The grand opening of the Mukilteo office of the National Bank of Commerce would take place this weekend. Richard S. Whitaker, manager of the new office, encouraged the public to visit the new bank at 202 Lincoln Ave. NBofC would have 75 offices in Washington.
25 years ago (1989)
Harold Carr, vice president of public relations and advertising for the Boeing Co., said new facilities could be built on 68 acres the company was buying from Snohomish County and another 200 acres it was buying from John Fluke Manufacturing Co.
Strong demand and a preference for upscale apartment living were pushing Snohomish County rents sky high. The county had the lowest apartment vacancy rate and the fastest rising rents in the Puget Sound area, rising from 4 to 10 percent in the past year.
