50 years ago (1955)
Everything, including a new kitchen sink, made the refurbished YMCA kitchen a more pleasant place to work. Some members of the Women’s Auxiliary Group VII that could be frequently found in the galley were Freda Dyre, Delores LeMaster, Doris Vekich, Audrey Nankivell, Mary Malstrom, Jo Sjostrom and Ingeborg Hilmo.
Rucker Avenue would be closed again between 19th Street and Everett Avenue for resurfacing. The next week, Hewitt Avenue would be closed for repaving between Broadway and Virginia Avenue. With those projects, Everett would be left with only a few blocks of brick streets.
25 years ago (1980)
The U.S. Heritage Conservation Recreation Service approved the city’s plans to develop a park just west of the Walter E. Hall Golf Course on Casino Road. The park would include play equipment, picnic tables, parking for 50 cars, a jogging trail and barbecue pits.
Eric Huffman, the No. 1 singles player at Meadowdale High School, had enjoyed successful seasons with the Chief tennis team. Foremost was a string of team victories that dated back three seasons. The senior standout had an 11-1 record for spring play. Coach Mike Hilton said Huffman was agile and got around the court very well.
