50 years ago (1955)
Friendship Camp No. 3553, Royal Neighbors of America, was to observe “Honor the Band” night at the Masonic Temple. A surprise feature would be revealed by the band. New officers would be in charge with Gracie Winifred Duren presiding.
Wheaton Scheldt, secretary-treasurer of the Everett Federal Savings &Loan, presented checks to the top four Herald carriers. They were Roald Haugen, 1910 Cleveland Ave.; Eugene Gatterman or Monroe; Peter Riber, 3526 Oakes Ave; and Laurel Bedingfield, 2024 Melvin, Pinehurst. The awards were based on savings ability and outstanding service.
25 years ago (1980)
In his Senior Soapbox column Bob Humphrey wrote about Whiskers of the Past. He reminisced about John Van Patten, who ran a barber shop in the 2800 block of Colby Avenue in 1929. Everything Van Patten had was the latest: chairs, towels, lots of mirrors, aprons – even a moving sign. The only old items were the personalized shaving mugs and the good old razors.
Boy Scouting was 70 years old this week. Cub Scouting was 50. The Scouts were taking time to celebrate and to acquaint people with their programs. They were partially funded by United Way contributions.
