50 years ago (1955)
Everett clubs held games nights this week to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Virg Cantrell, Verne Backland, Bob Hunt, Bill Burch, Blaine Wise, Charles Hayes and Jim Geary made the arrangements. Clubs participating included the Elks, Eagles, Normanna, VFW, American Legion and Yacht Club.
Helen’s Rhythm School for kids 4 and 5 years old was reopening for its three-times-a-week classes. Helen Williams taught the classes in her home at 1231 Rucker Ave. The classes involved play, music and art.
25 years ago (1980)
The Liberian bulk carrier C.K. Apollo tied up at the still-unfinished Norton Avenue Terminal, the first ship to call at the $11 million Port of Everett facility. Ken Kirkland, the port’s director of marine terminals, said the 545-foot-long ship from Japan and its Korean crew were expected to be in port three days.
The news that six American diplomats had escaped from Iran was exciting for Mary Hecox of Edmonds. Hecox’s brother, Mark Lijek, and his wife, Cora, were among the half-dozen people hidden and aided by Canadians in eluding possible Iranian capture.
