50 years ago (1954)
As Postmaster Ed Hennessey looked on, Mayor C. Arvid Johnson mailed a letter from the newly installed drive-up mailbox just outside the post office at Wall Street and Colby Avenue. The mailbox was a technological breakthrough. It was no longer necessary to park and get out of the car to mail a letter in Everett.
Numbers were in from Tuesday’s incorporation vote, and Mountlake Terrace was now the state’s newest city and the county’s second largest. Gilbert Geiser, 35, a hardware dealer, was elected the new city’s first mayor. Patrick McMahan, chairman of the Mountlake Terrace Study Group, received congratulations from officials from the next two youngest cities, Normandy Park and Bellevue.
25 years ago (1979)
Peter Challman and Rob Peterson realized a dream they had while students at Washington State University. They opened Arnie’s, a steak and seafood restaurant, at 714 Second St. in Mukilteo. The 6,000-square-foot eatery overlooked the lighthouse.
Construction was under way on an addition to the offices of Richard Toyer, certified public accountant. The expanded office at 1215 50th St. would make room for new staffers and privacy for clients.
