50 years ago (1954)
Several Everett bike racers were to compete in an annual speed and endurance contest – a grueling 25-mile race around Lake Samammish. Called the Redmond Bike Derby, it was sponsored by the American Bicycle League. Local competitors were Bob Pollard, Jean Pollard, Gary Petticlerc, Martin Moe and Ona Mae Welch.
Members of the Marysville Assembly of Rainbow for Girls were cleaning up the town by washing cars. They would be at Marysville service stations, Husby’s, Barclay’s and Letehiser’s.
25 years ago (1979)
Mike Benbow wrote that Snohomish County commissioners had approved an $11,700 study to determine the practicality of housing county jail prisoners above Wetmore Avenue. Proposed were twin office towers, one for the city and one for the county, to be located on opposite corners of Wetmore Avenue and linked by a jail on the top floor.
Motorists traveling I-5 between Everett and the Snohomish-King County line might encounter traffic delays. Rod Belcher, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said the delays were being caused by a nine-mile repaving project between Eastmont and 164th Street SW and construction of the Swamp Creek interchange.
