50 years ago (1954)
Cliff Shaw, 15, of Edmonds, won Everett’s first-ever Soap Box Derby and a trip to Akron, Ohio. The red-headed teen, in his A-95, defeated Thomas Valeson Class B champion in an all-Edmonds finale. As runner-up Valeson won a bicycle. Seventy-four contestants competed in 21/2 hours of heats and elimination rounds on Hewitt Avenue that drew a crowd of 5,000.
Thirty-three Volkswagens, cars and trucks made in Germany, were unloaded from the French Line’s MS Chile at Pier 1 here. The Chile was sharing anchoring space with the American Mail.
25 years ago (1979)
Cans of chicken littered the edge of the freeway offramp at 128th Street SW when a truck carrying the cases of canned goods to a storage area at Paine Field lost part of its load. About 400 of the 1,100 cases fell from the truck
Allan May wrote about the perfect picnic atop Mount Pilchuck. This meant a drive up to the ski area and a 2-mile hike through a hemlock forest to the rocky summit. The meal could be eaten while viewing Everett, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Mount Baker, Glacier Peak and Mount Rainier. If the descent began early enough all of this could be done after work.
