The truce in the Korean War was the top story of the previous year, with the death of the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin second. Other major headliners were the inauguration of President Eisenhower, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the death of Sen. Robert Taft, rioting in East Berlin and the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping.
Donald and Barbara Jean Dearth were here from Pullman for the Christmas holidays with Barbara Dearth’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Briggs. Also at the family reunion was Shirley Ann Briggs, a student at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
Despite a warming trend, freezing temperatures continued to nip at unprotected water pipes and produce dangerous ice on bodies of water. Jake Jacobson of Jacobson Plumbing in Marysville received 150 calls over a three-day period.
Tallman’s (since 1890) was starting a January clearance sale on new pianos and organs to reduce stock for new models. They carried such brand names as Kawai, Thomas, Lowrey, Ivers &Pond, Wurlitzer, Story &Clark and Farfisa. Tallman’s was in Everett Mall.
