The Miley Building at 1714-18 Hewitt Ave. was purchased from Corrine Swalwell by T. Macchia. The structure housed the American Barber Shop, Everett Optical, Gene Nastri’s Musical School, Marvel Beauty Shop and William Griffith Insurance.
Also changing hands was the adjoining Turf Building at 1712 Hewitt Ave., from Carl Swanson to George Thornhill. The Turf Cigar Store and Restaurant occupied the ground floor. On the second floor were offices of Dr. D.D. Forsland and Local 120 of the Building Service Employees Union. The quarters of Everett Contract Bridge League also were there.
The board of directors of the Tulalip Tribes decided not to seek an extension of the April 30 deadline for burying solid waste at the landfill in the Snohomish River sloughs. Seattle Disposal Co., which had a contract with the tribes to fill the marshy land and make it into an industrial site, had until November to complete covering and grading the land.
