Esther Mellinger, president of Old Guard Auxiliary, VFW No. 2100, greeted representatives of Everett’s patriotic orders who were guests of the auxiliary. They included Selma Haug, Fern Miller, Alva Evans, Elsie Trevallee, Myrtle Mundell, Christine Eddy, Helen Sievers, Dorothy McPhaul, Katherine Hammond, Lois Johnson, Frances Sensmeier, Minnie Dye and Dara Campbell.
Residents on the 1500 block of Colby Avenue were beautifying the area by planting Kwanzan cherry trees. Shown tamping down the soil around a new tree were Mrs. A.E. Boynton and Mary Routledge.
Peter Lawyer of Lake Stevens, a saw sharpener at Weyerhaeuser Mill B, was reflecting on his 21 years at the mill. The mill, a fixture along the river in northeast Everett since 1915, was closing. There wasn’t enough old-growth timber to keep it operating.
Cascade Savings and Loan Association planned to open two new branches in Bellevue and Tacoma, expanding its network in Everett, Lynnwood, Seattle, Marysville and Bellingham. The Everett branch manager was Craig Winkels, who also headed the Downtown Everett Association of merchants.
