50 years ago (1963)
A large fir tree at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe K. Hart, 816 35th St., was split by a bolt of lightning that struck during yesterday afternoon’s storm. One limb was knocked off, the tree’s trunk split and the lawn was showered with wood chips.
It was the grand opening of Jack Salsman and Son Shoe Cobblers at B&M Frontier Village, Lake Stevens. The business featured fast, efficient shoe repair service using the latest modern equipment, including the 1963 “Heelorama,” a fully automatic machine used for removing old heels and installing new ones.
25 years ago (1988)
Everett Community College finished first-round play with two ties in the Fraser Valley College international men’s soccer tournament. Bryan Myers scored off assists from teammates Mvocav Khampapahn and Kelly Young.
Jim Ovenell, of Marysville, won the $7,500 first prize for the heaviest catch in the Seafair Million Dollar Salmon Derby. The salmon that Ovenell caught off Mukilteo weighed 29 pounds, 8 ½ ounces. There weren’t any winners of the $1 million prize among the estimated 7,500 participants, as none of the 86 tagged salmon released were caught.
