50 years ago (1963)
Expansion of the downtown J.C. Penney store was announced by manager Don Gillette. The firm would take over the building now occupied by the Sheraton Trading Post, across the alley. The upper floor would be occupied with offices while the lower floor would be a sales area.
Crews of Belden Electric began installation this week on new aluminum light standards in connection with the Broadway street light project. The tentative project completion date was early December, with the installation of new mercury-vapor lights from 39th St. to the Walnut St. interchange.
25 years ago (1988)
Sandy LaLonde, manager of the Jack in the Box at Everett Ave. and Broadway, recently had to shut down because she was unable to fill her 3 a.m. shift. Fast food restaurants along Broadway and on 196th St. in Lynnwood often were carrying “help wanted” signs in their windows.
A skinny California sea lion parked itself on the Brackett’s Landing beach yesterday and stayed for several hours before being “urged” back offshore by a federal fisheries official. It was unusual for one of the animals to come on the beach in the vicinity of people.
