50 years ago (1963)
A half-century was a long time to be separated, especially for brothers. Oscar Strid, 87, of Arlington, met Victor Strid, 69, of Mississippi, this morning for the first time in 67 years. The elder Strid had left Sweden when his little brother was a toddler.
Smiling delightedly while holding her new magic set of 20 tricks was Lisa Shalan, 9, of Everett. She was a winner in the Young Hobby club. Lisa was the daughter of Mrs. Audrey Shalan of 6923 E. Berkshire Dr., and Mahdi Shalan of Bagdad, Iraq.
25 years ago (1988)
Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and Time didn’t predict it. But Dick Watson, veteran Mariner High School swim coach, had a premonition an upset could be in the making at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. It happened when Anthony Nesty of Surinam won 100-meter butterfly. Nesty had been coached as a youth by Watson.
Bayliner Marine Corp., in Arlington, was planning a major expansion that would create almost 1,000 new jobs over the next three years. Spokesman George Sullivan said three new buildings here would centralize the company’s operations.
