50 years ago (1963)
Five employees of Black Clawson-Sumner retired after a total of 229 years of experience at the plant. Al Abrahamson and Vern Billings had served for 50 years, Jim Keefe had put in 47, and Bill Christenson and Charles Ecklund each 41.
Dave Swanson, Everett High senior and Governor of the School’s Distributive Education Club, was elected president of the Distributive Education Clubs of Washington. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Swanson, 1615 Rainier Ave.
25 years ago (1988)
Sandy Shell started laughing when she saw a giant pumpkin floating over the sky in Snohomish while driving home on U.S. 2. It was actually a helium-filled vinyl balloon tethered to the home of Roger Gable, creator of the Halloween greeting. He had done similar projects for Christmas and the Fourth of July.
Kristi Abrams, 13, eighth grader at Meadowdale Middle School, could thoughtfully discuss state tax reform or solutions to traffic congestion in the area, saying they affected her future. She would be one of 10 student panelists firing questions at Gov. Booth Gardner and his challenger, Bob Williams, during their live televised debate.
