50 years ago (1963)
Recently opened in the 1900 block of Broadway was the Bargain House. The business dealt with used items on consignment. Hardly a secondhand store, it specialized in organs, pianos and antiques. Mr. and Mrs. I.L. “Pep” Slosson were the operators. He formerly was with Broadway Organ and Piano.
Said to be the oldest business in Monroe under the same name, Wagner Lumber Co. had been sold to Carlson and Sons, for many years in the lumber, trucking and welding business in Monroe.
25 years ago (1988)
Bob Walste of Mukilteo gathered rays and waves — the kind that collected in portable radios — on the beach next to the Mukilteo lighthouse where temperatures soared into the mid-90s. Walste’s choice of music, a symphony, was a little different from that of other sun worshippers.
Dave Stafford could “bearly” believe his eyes while sitting on his Alderwood Manor back porch at 1510 Maple Road yesterday morning. A black bear was playing in the yard of his next door neighbors at 1518 Maple Road, Marvin and Ethel Stave. The sighting was another in the increasing bears seen in the area.
