50 years ago (1963)
The Great Northern Railway wanted to build itsheadquarters just south of the Weyerhaeuser sulphite mill (A) and to extend fill 325 feet out into Port Gardner. But Mayor George Gebert assured homeowners nearby that rail yard construction was prohibited by city zoning regulations. GN was threatening to move the bulk of their operations here to south of Seattle.
David C. Petershagen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin B. Petershagen, 4720 Mermont Dr., enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserves on March 25 and flew to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on April 5. Following basic training there, he would attend technical training in Illinois.

The Everett branch of American Association of University Women was holding a meeting for new and prospective members at the home of Velma Steward, 2302 Colby Avenue, No. 27A.
Donald Nelson of Monroe, current president of the Pacific Northwest Quarter Horse Association, was a new director of the American Quarter Horse Association. He had a consulting engineer geology company in Monroe.
