50 years ago (1963)
St. Anne’s Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church was busy preparing for the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper in the parish hall. Patricia Ernst and Nancy Lowery, co-chairs of the event, promised heaps of homemade buttermilk pancakes, ham, fruit, coffee, tea or milk. This traditional fare had been served by the guild for more than a decade.
Curtis Edwin Blem, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Edwin Blem, 1524 Virginia Ave., was a year old today. Grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Blem of Lake Stevens and Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Hatley and H.C. Ricker of Everett.
25 years ago (1988)
Housing growth had made Bob Dettman and Peter Backus’ daily walk along Highway 9 in Snohomish less peaceful. The two-lane arterial was the only north-south alternative to I-5 that spanned the length of the county. Some feared the highway could become clogged on a rich diet of traffic.
Quality eyewear didn’t have to be expensive. Dr. Greg Hare at Franz Optical could fit customers with contacts for just $99. Franz Optical, which had been serving the Northwest for 20 years, was open Saturdays.
