50 years ago (1964)
Arnold Zempel, Everett attorney, was installed as president of Normanna Lodge. Zempel succeeded Dean Hegge, who assumed the post of councilor. In charge of the installation program were Nellie Kolstad and Charles Thompson.
Organized drag racing, held over a marked course on Highway 1-A (now 9), complete with starter, timer and radio-equipped lookouts, was halted temporarily with the apprehension of 16 car-loads of boys and girls by sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff Donald Jennings said the young people were from 17 to 25 in age.
25 years ago (1989)
Kathy Ruddy gave free introductory sewing classes at the House of Fabrics in Everett and Lynnwood. She had been sewing since she was seven. By the time she enrolled in the required sewing class in seventh grade, she was creating designer clothes. Today, she turned out copies of Anne Klein, Giorgio Armani and Liz Claiborne designs.
A rezone request for a small site near Brier drew a strongly worded rejection from hearing examiner Peter Donahue. He recently denied a request that would have allowed denser development of an area in the Swamp Creek Valley east of Brier.
