50 years ago (1964)
Karen Hansen, an Everett Junior College student, was awarded a scholarship by South Everett Commercial Club. The award was presented Stan Heim, the club’s scholarship chair; Bob Dickson, club president, and Jerry Foss, EJC executive dean and comptroller.
Today was the grand opening of Everett’s second Herfy’s, located at 5034 Claremont Ave. It was operated by Fred Schmidt and Bill and Anna Lucas. A third would open in Salem, Ore., in about 60 days, and a fourth would open in the Seattle area. The first was at 21st Street and Broadway in Everett.
25 years ago (1989)
Everett Alexander, a farmer and dike commissioner on Ebey Island just east of Everett, said a combination of wind and tides brought flood waters to within a few inches of topping dikes in the north end of the island. Snohomish County was spared the kind of flood damage seen farther north in Whatcom County.
Anthony Rodriguez of Everett, an Edmonds Community College music student, was called the “Pavarotti of Produce” by some. A checker at the Lynnwood Haggen store, he often serenaded his customers with melodies, including classical, light jazz, popular songs from the 50s and 60s and Sinatra and Mathis favorites.
