50 years ago (1964)
Everybody, but everybody was backing the United Good Neighbors fund campaign this fall. This included small business head Harold Berry of Berry’s Meat Market, Owen Ness at Karl’s Bakery and Jeanne Winant, an employee at Lion’s Furniture.
Everett Park Department crews were busy planting Evergreen trees in new street planters being installed in the downtown business district. Financed by local merchants through the Retail Trades Bureau, the planters would be maintained by the park department.
25 years ago (1989)
EvCC teacher David McCourt was retiring after trying to keep the humanities alive in what had essentially become a trade school. The popular political science professor said it was time to throw off the old coat as teacher and lecturer and let the winds do what they will.
Daisy Twiss and Gene Murry wheeled through their routine, performed to the tune, “Surry With the Fringe on Top.” They were part of the Josephine Sunset Home Precision Wheelchair Drill Team. Administrator Monica Mattson came up with the idea after seeing the Warm Beach Athletic Team’s lawnmower drill team.
