50 years ago (1964)
County Commissioner J.E. “Ed” McCollum looked on proudly as the new J.E. McCollum Park Pioneer Park was dedicated in his name yesterday. The 88-acre park site was formerly a gravel pit for the county road district and a garbage dump after that.
Gretchen Hawley of Everett flashed a big grin after being named winner of the cow milking contest the accompanied the selection of the annual Harvest Ball queen at Washington State University. The five finalists milked for five minutes and she got the most.
25 years ago (1989)
Tulalip fisherman Conrad Reeves guided his chum salmon net on the reel of his boat at the Tulalip dock yesterday. He was hoping the chum season was better than the coho season, which was almost over. As Reeves guided the net, Dennis Hill and Larry Jimicum prepared to gather the coho gear they had just removed.
Snohomish County PUD crews responded to about 25 power outages yesterday when winds up to 30 miles per hour sent tree limbs and trees into wires, utility operations superintendent Larry Rogers said. The largest, in Brier, involved about 800 customers.
