EVERETT — An Edmonds man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for clobbering his roommate with a baseball bat spiked with screws.
As part of his plea agreement, Ryan McCoy is forbidden from possessing “bats, clubs, knives, swords or weapons of any kind.” McCoy, 21, admitted last month he committed second-degree assault, a domestic violence crime.
Edmonds police found multiple homemade weapons in the man’s bedroom, including a makeshift shotgun and more spiked bats and clubs. A bloody bat was located in a laundry hamper. Police suspect that’s where McCoy tossed it after bludgeoning his roommate.
The victim suffered a fractured skull, a broken nose and brain bleeding.
He told police McCoy attacked him March 23 during an argument over a coin jar. The man accused McCoy of stealing the change from his van.
McCoy later charged into his room with the bat. The man pushed the defendant once, before the attack happened, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Scott Halloran wrote in court papers.
His mother told police that McCoy had been using methamphetamine, Halloran wrote. She also said he told her earlier in the day that he didn’t like the way the roommate spoke to him. He threatened to assault the man, court papers said.
The woman heard the attack from another room and found the injured man in a pool of blood. She told her son and his girlfriend to leave.
Officers found the victim in a hallway. He had obvious head injuries and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
McCoy was arrested as he was walking away from his mother’s house.
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Eric Lucas ordered McCoy to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation once he’s released from prison. The defendant also is banned from having any contact with the victim for a decade.
