EVERETT — The sentencing for a Lake Stevens woman who pleaded guilty in the overdose death of an Everett woman has been delayed until February.
Mallori Smith, 24, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree manslaughter in the death of Kyla Helvey, 21. Helvey died in September 2007 of acute intoxication after taking a potent rave drug, also known to be used as a date-rape drug.
Smith and co-defendant Brooke James, 21, were accused of providing the drug to Helvey and failing to summon help after she collapsed. Prosecutors also are investigating the possibility that Helvey was raped.
As part of the plea agreement, Smith agreed to testify against James. Prosecutors wanted to delay the sentence until after she testified. She faces up to three years in prison.
James’ trial is expected to be delayed for a couple of months.
