OAK HARBOR – The lives of two sailors who were killed July 17 in Iraq will be remembered during a memorial service at 4 p.m. today at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, a spokeswoman said.
Both members of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, they died when high explosives were set off under their armored vehicle north of Baghdad in Salah Ad Din province.
A memorial fund has been established for the families of Chief Petty Officer Patrick Wade, 38, and Petty Officer 1st Class Jeffrey Chaney, 36.
Donations can be made at any Navy Federal Credit Union worldwide or by calling 360-240-0996 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Checks also can be mailed to the Navy Federal Credit Union, 275 SE Cabot Drive, Oak Harbor, WA 98277, the spokeswoman said.
In addition, personal notes of condolence to the families can be mailed to EODMU-11, 180 Tulagi Ave., Oak Harbor, WA 98278.
The men performed the dangerous work of defusing roadside bombs and destroying other explosives.
Three other members of the unit were killed in Iraq earlier this year.
