WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Wednesday released the names of the five U.S. servicemen killed in the crash Sunday of an MH-53 helicopter near Bagram, Afghanistan. Their deaths raised to 97 the number of American servicemen killed in Afghanistan since the war there began in October 2001.
The servicemen are:
Army Sgt. Major Phillip R. Albert, 41, of Terryville, Conn.; assigned to 2nd battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, N.Y.
Air Force Maj. Steven Plumhoff, 33, of Neshanic Station, N.J., assigned to the 58th Operations Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Thomas A. Walkup Jr., 25, of Millville, N.J., assigned to the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Howard A. Walters, 33, of Port Huron, Mich., assigned to the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field.
Air Force Tech. Sgt. William J. Kerwood, 37, of Houston, Mo., assigned to the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field.
