SEATTLE — Seattlepi.com reports that a King County sheriff’s deputy accused of beating a 15-year-old girl in a holding cell was offered a plea bargain, but the deal was killed by the Justice Department.
The federal agency has been investigating the videotaped confrontation in November between 31-year-old Deputy Paul Schene and Malika Calhoun, who is now 16. If convicted of federal civil rights violations, Schene could face 3½ years in prison, compared with up to a year on state charges.
Seattlepi.com reports that documents show the U.S. attorney’s office and county prosecutors had agreed to let Schene resign and plead guilty. He would serve six to nine months on state charges, and no federal charges would be brought.
Schene has pleaded innocent to fourth-degree assault.
