A Snohomish County jury Monday ruled that a former Everett Cub Scout leader is a sexually violent predator who is likely to commit another crime, and he should be locked up and treated until he is no longer a danger to society.
The jury committed Garth David Snively, 57, for an indefinite time to the state’s Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island. He will not be released until he no longer is considered a sexually violent predator or until a court orders his conditional release.
Snively was convicted of three sexual attacks on children in the early 1990s, but during treatment he admitted to molesting between 30 and 100 young people, according to testimony.
In 1993, Snohomish County prosecutors alleged that Snively fondled young boys and made them dress in diapers. He would make victims change adult diapers worn by him and rub baby power on him. The children were all less than 12 years old.
In a six-day trial that began last week and concluded Monday, an assistant attorney general maintained that Snively in the past recruited young boys by becoming a scout or church leader, and that he’s more likely than not to offend again if he is released.
Defense attorney Royce Ferguson argued that the statistics show that Snively wouldn’t commit another offense.
Snively has been in prison or at the Special Commitment Center since his conviction in 1993.
